03.29.11 Update

Hello there! Thank you to those who showed up at our 2011 Spring Quarter Kickoff meeting. It was great seeing all the lovely faces, new and old. We hope to see you all at our second general meeting next week. But in the mean time, here is the weekly update. :]

Applications attached to the newsletters and uploaded onto the website. 12 Positions are open for you to get more involved and gain leadership experience

Rotary Japan Relief fund – at the General Meeting

Come and donate $2 to receive a bracelet that will go towards helping those affected by the Japan earthquake. Find an officer or donate at a general meeting. 100% of donations will go to the Rotary Japan Relief Fund.

Have anything to say or would like to be involved in our discussion processes? Attend a Board Meeting to experience the behind the scenes workings of Campus Rotaract!

Rotary International Convention – May 21st-25th @ New Orleans, Louisiana

The Rotary International Convention is a great opportunity too meet and network with Rotaractors and Rotarians from all over the world. It’s a great way to learn more about Rotary, worldwide service projects, and develop yourself into a better leader. The Rotary International Convention is the single best networking opportunity a young professional could have, as well as a mind-blowing eye-opener to the world of Rotary. Being at the RI Convention will really change your mindset about the international scale of Rotary. The convention is May 21-25, but it’s up to you how long you want to stay. If you’re interested in attending, more information can be found below. Please contact our president, Kristin Dang, at [email protected] if you have any questions or are interested in attending. We can help make hotel and other arrangements.
PRE-CONVENTION & CONVENTION DATES:
Pre-convention begins on Thursday, May 19th and runs until morning of Saturday, May 21st.
Rotary International Convention begins on Saturday May 21st and runs until Wednesday May 25th.
STEPS FOR REGISTERING FOR THE RI CONVENTION (via email):
1. Fill out the writable PDF that can be downloaded here.
– Be sure to select “Rotaractor” (category code “6”) when indicating your registration type in order to receive the Rotaract discount.
2. Save the completed PDF.
3. Email the completed pdf to [email protected]
REGISTERING FOR ROTARACT SOCIAL EVENTS:
If you are interested in the social events, you can find out all about these events by checking out the schedule page of the Rotaract Pre-Convention site. Tickets generally end up selling out. So if you’re interested, do check them out.
If you have any questions about the convention or how to fill out the registration, or anything at all, please do not hesitate to contact Kristin. And feel free to tell anyone you think is interested in attending the convention.

Freakin’ Awesome Fridays – Friday, April 1st [4-6PM] @ Study Lounge at The Colleges (164 La Rue Rd.)

Help create, design, and build our Picnic Day decorations for our food booth. Our booth theme is Pac Man, so you know it’s going to be EPIC.

Time Off for Caregivers – Saturday, April 23rd [10AM-2PM] @ Davis Senior Center (646 A St)

Come bond with seniors at our local Senior Center while giving their caregivers a day off. Play games and hear crazy stories of the seniors’ interesting lives.

Davis Community Meals – Saturday, April 23rd [9AM-11AM;11AM-1PM] @ St. Martin’s Episcopal Church (640 Hawthorne Ln.)

Help prepare food for low-income and homeless individuals and families, set up the dining hall, serve meals, and clean up the kitchen and dining hall at the end of lunch. A great way to help and connect with our local community!

Mondavi Event – Friday, April 8th [5-10PM] @ Mondavi Center

Come help us work a few food booths and hear some great music from Yo-Yo Ma! If you’re over 21, we’d be greatly appreciative!

Relay for Life – April 9-10th [10:00AM-10:00AM] @ Aggie Football Stadium

Relay for Life Team T-shirts – Friday, April 1st [4-6PM] @ Study Lounge at The Colleges (164 La Rue Rd.)

The theme this year for our Relay for Life team is going to be Superheroes! 😀 This is for the people that have officially signed up on either team to make team t-shirts. They will be $1. This is designed to be a team bonding activity before the actual day.

San Francisco Day Trip – Saturday, April 2nd [1PM] @ (meet at the tennis courts) San Francisco, CA

We will all caravan to San Francisco. We are going to walk part of the Golden Gate Bridge, eat dinner at Pier 39, a bonfire at the beach (if the weather permits it), and end it at the scenic viewpoint at Twin Peaks. Since we are leaving at 1pm please eat lunch before we leave. The cost will be $9 per person; this covers gas, toll and parking permits. Dinner is NOT included in the fee. It will be really fun! *Remember warm gear, i.e. warm coat with a hood, regardless how warm it says it will be in SF. There is a chance of showers so an umbrella is a good idea, too.

Relay for Life –April 9-10th [10AM-10AM] @ Aggie Stadium

Come out and have fun while supporting a great cause, cancer research. We have two teams. We are going to make team t-shirts. At the event, we will walk, play various board games, play on the grass, and have a lot of fun. There is also the opportunity to have Girls Scouts put people in jail as well as enjoying various shows and festivities put on by other clubs and associations.

Health Education Council Internship @ Luther Burbank School in Sacramento

This internship is for spring and/or summer. You work with the Food Justice afterschool and summer program, 4-6 hrs per week between the hours of 8 am- 5 pm. For spring quarter have to be able to volunteer on Tuesday or Thursday 3-5 PM. MUST have reliable transportation. Gain skills in youth development practices, curriculum development, and effective nutrition education.

Translational Cognitive & Affective Neuroscience Lab Internship @ UC Davis Imaging Research Center in UCD/MC in Sacramento

The internship looks at neural mechanisms that contribute to deficits in schizophrenia patients. Imaging techniques: fMRI, EEG, and behavioral tasks will be used to look at working memory and neural connectivity. Major: psychology, NPB with an interest in cognitive neuroscience, & computer science are encouraged to apply. 8 hours per week for 1 year.

Spring Internship and Career Fair – Thursday, April 7th [10AM-2PM] @ ARC Pavilion

Looking for an internship? Graduating and needing a job? Come to the Internship and Career Fair next Thursday and continue your search there! Over 95 companies are registered to be looking for someone like you! Make sure you come ready with a resume and dress sharp. They are known to do on the spot interviews at the fair. Besides, you know you look good dressed up. 😉

Career Speed Dating – Wednesday, April 20th [4PM] @ Freeborn Hall

Speed dating for your career? Definitely. It’s just like speed dating, but for your career. Pick a table, move to the next when you hear the chime about 5 minutes later. Network and hear about internship opportunities! As always be prepared with a resume and look sharp. Opportunity favors the prepared.
